Saltburn is where the Cleveland Way meets the sea. You can almost hear the sighs of relief as walkers on the long-distance trail dip weary toes into cold water after several days on the North York Moors. But this route following the Way along clifftop paths offers some dramatic sights, including the east coast’s highest point at Boulby. Above the crashing waves, a landscape marked by centuries of industry is being reclaimed by wild flowers and sea birds. Meanwhile the walk’s start and finish points are two of the north-east’s most charming seaside spots: the restored Victorian grandeur of Saltburn-by-the-Sea; and Staithes, where the houses clinging to its harbour sides tell tales of brave fishermen, daring smugglers and the explorer Captain Cook.
