Not much further on is the street skateboarding park situated beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall. At first sight this seems all frenetic motion accompanied by wooden clacks, raucous cheers and high fives… It’s a great part of London full of verve and life and owes everything to enthusiastic people and nothing to local government who keep trying to close it or strangle it with rules and regulations.

Just before reaching Banstead you cross a 25 acre field of organically grown lavender. Mayfield Lavender helpfully provide display boards that highlight the many and varied properties of this plant. At one point they say: “Physically, it is ‘first-aid in a bottle’” – which is funny because I always think of lager that way.

Walking brings with it significant health benefits and more people walking more places makes for a better environment. Women make more trips than men (but I don’t know whether that means they walk further) and it is estimated that 20% of walking trips are made for leisure. Oh yes, and as well as it being fun, it’s free.
