Wetland walks
Tomorrow marks World Wetlands Day, with events across the UK and around the world celebrating the biodiversity of these special habitats. Among the highlights are walks through the Norfolk Broads and other important marshlands around the country.
Events in The Broads start in the morning with a five mile Winter Wildfowl walk at Hardley Flood on the River Chet, near Loddon. A Broads Authority countryside ranger will point out the amazing wildfowl of the peaceful Chet Valley and explain why wetlands are so special. In the afternoon Broads Authority and Natural England rangers will lead a special two mile walk around the Bure Marshes in an area not normally open to the public – Wellington boots will be needed even if the weather is sunny and dry!
Both walks are free. The morning walk is from 10am -12.30pm and you will need to phone before joining the walk, however, as the site is liable to flood and details may change. The second walk takes place from 1.30pm-4pm but booking is essential. Contact the Broads Authority for both walks on 01603 610734.
If you’re not close enough to The Broads, fear not, as there are plenty of other wetlands aroud the country to explore. The Wildlife Trusts website lists them all, and with the RSPB and other authorities planning events too there’s bound to be something near you. Don’t forget to post your pictures, too!
