Get walking for Green Transport week
18/06/2007
Mendip walkers are being encouraged to enjoy the delights of the district's countryside as part of Green Transport Week (June 16 to 24).
Mendip District Council is urging everyone to get fit and healthy by taking part in its latest leisure project, Health Walks in Mendip.
The newly launched scheme aims to promote good health and well-being, and includes a range of one to four-mile walks.
The events are taking place across the district including many in and around Shepton Mallet, Wells, Street, Glastonbury and Frome.
They take in a variety of settings from street and woodland walking to evening and weekend strolls.
Earlier this year the council began recruiting for walk leaders, and were so pleased with the response that more than 30 walks have been organised from June to August.
Tracey Kenyon, Mendip District Council's active lifestyle officer, said: "We have had a good response to the walks so far with many people enjoying strolls across the district.
"We are especially keen to encourage people to take part in Wells and Shepton Mallet where we have organised more than 10 walks."
The council's portfolio holder for community, Cllr Ron Forrest, said: "Throughout Green Transport Week we should all consider what we can do to improve our lifestyles and the environment.
"A good first step would be to get out into the countryside on one of the council's health walks, which are taking place across the district. It is projects like this that prove how committed Mendip District Council is to encouraging healthy lifestyles."
If you would like to join one of the walks there is no need to book a place, just turn up at the time and location featured in the Health Walks in Mendip leaflet.
