South Downs victory

ramblers-south-downs16Nearly 20 years after local and national organisations – including the Ramblers – first got together to form the South Downs Campaign, the pressure group can finally celebrate after the government announced the boundary for a new South Downs National Park across Sussex and Hampshire. The proposed park will officially be opened in 2011 and includes the hotly contested Western Weald, as well as the towns of Ditchling and Lewes. For the full story behind the new National Park, see our feature from the summer issue of Walk.

A celebratory walk around the South Downs’ Durford Heath and Harting Common takes place on Saturday 6 June at 10.30am, led by Owen Plunkett – a local volunteer for the Ramblers and South Downs Campaign. For more details, call ✆ 02392 254959 or email owen.plunkett@tiscali.co.uk
