Fosse Way re-opens to public
A footpath closed to the public for nearly 15 years has re-opened thanks to a sustained effort from local residents, the Ramblers, a parish council and a Member of Parliament. Chief campaigner Mary Young was unrelenting in her efforts to regain access to a section of the Fosse Way, between Forest Road and Ten Pound Lane, in Narborough. Volunteers from Leicestershire Ramblers and staff at Ramblers’ central office provided legal assistance. The half-mile stretch had been inaccessible since 1995 when the new landowners, Alliance & Leicester, barred the old hospital gates. Leicestershire County Council first refused to make an Order to reopen them, but was later directed to do so by the Secretary of State. The Order was finally confirmed in May 2009 with the official opening ceremony taking place on 7 August.
