Family Walkfest

Northumberland National Park’s Family Walkfest 2009 starts tomorrow, with three days of outdoor events and guided walks on offer. The various activities on offer promise adults and children the chance to sample the pleasures of open country in the hills and valleys of the National Park, with the added dimension of a knowledgeable guide. The programme is as follows:

Wednesday 26th August
Old Rothbury – 6.30pm
This superb walk has a small amount of climbing up to Old Rothbury, with fabulous views over to Simonside in Northumberland National Park. The walk is good under foot but strong shoes are recommended.
Grade: Moderate (Suitable for families and children)

Thursday 27th August
Shepherds Don’t Get Lost! – 1pm
Learn to navigate with map and compass (both provided) while you go “off-road” into the countryside with a knowledgeable guide from Shepherds Walks.
Grade:  Moderate (Suitable for families and children)

Friday 28th August
Hi Tech Satellite Geo-trailing on Simonside – From 10am (last trail starts at 3pm)
Geo-trailing is the latest hi-tech treasure hunt using a GPS unit (Global Positioning System) instead of a traditional map. There are 9 caches to find around a 3 mile walk using the GPS unit provided and in each cache there is a quiz question with a prize at the end.
Grade: Moderate
Meet your guide at Rothbury National Park Visitor Centre for transfer by Landrover to Simonside.
Cost: £10 per unit (max 6 people per unit).

A Feast for the Eyes from Simonside – 1pm
The ridge between Dove Crag and Simonside has some spectacular views on a clear day. This 7 mile walk with a guide from Shepherds Walks rewards you with some of the nicest views in Northumberland.
