Bluebell hunt

bluebell21Join the hunt for Britain’s native bluebell this summer, with a series of free walks led by Ramblers experts. More than a hundred walks are planned by the end of June through some of Britain’s finest woodland and countryside, each one aiming to survey the threat to the native bluebell from hybridisation with the invading Spanish bluebell. It’s the fourth year the Ramblers has been involved with the campaign organised by the Natural History Museum (NHM) and conservation charity Plantlife. The data received from walkers via an online survey is used to build up a map of where the native bluebell is thriving.

“We’re at that crucial point now in research where the picture will be complete with just a bit more information,” says Fred Rumsey, botanist at the NHM. “We just need one more final push.”

All led walks are free and open to all, varying in length from 8 to 22km/5 to 14 miles. Search for your nearest walk on the Ramblers website or read more about the bluebell campaign and the online survey at www.nhm.ac.uk/bluebells
