A forest saved

The Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) has succeeded in raising enough funds to buy most of Cwm Mynach, a remote and beautiful valley in the Snowdonia National Park. The charity has now completed the purchase of nearly 1000 acres, with the aim of gradually re-establishing native woodland and other valuable wildlife habitats across a landscape now dominated by conifer plantation. The previous owner shares the Trust’s vision of expanding and re-creating native woodland and other valuable wildlife habitats throughout the valley, and therefore offered to sell the land to them for considerably less than the market value.
“We are hugely grateful to each one of the nearly 15,000 of people who have contributed to the appeal,” says Eryl Roberts of the Woodland Trust. “This is great news and a really important milestone for the valley. It signals the start of a great deal of work making detailed plans to restore the landscape of the valley. We are looking forward to working closely with our new neighbours and indeed the whole of the local community in doing this.”
