There is also growing popularity in caches that are intended to be completed at night. In many caches these caches use http://www.cacheatnight.com/collections/firetacks as a way of guiding the cacher to the cache. UV enabled caches are the next thing in night geocaching.

Although I can Stephanie's point (if you have been involved with this kind of activity for some time, it may seem intrusive so many people are now taking part). But consider... My wife, 2 children (5 and 8) and I have only started Geocaching the last month. It has transformed our free time. especially in the winter when indoor activities seem the obvious thing to do.
We have been to places we never would have visited, and the children are even so enthusiastic it's amasing. It has also been educational for all of us. We've visited historical sites, seen beautiful views and managed to capture some amazing wildlife shots, we've been to a cold war bunker, hunted for snakes (the multi cache theme) and will be visiting a village that was evacuated in WW2 as soon as access permits. Not to mention the fresh air and exercise we've been getting. As for the caches in car parks etc... We haven't come accross any yet but all of the ones we've visited (and plan to visit) are extremely well thought out and people have put lots of effort and imagination into making them exciting and interesting. about 70% of friends/family we mention this to either have, or plan to now enter the wild and give Geocaching a go. The more people encouraged to take regular walks in our beautiful country the better. Not forgetting in times of financial strain these walks are free and great for losing yourself and your troubles. First class stress relief! So keep on Caching I say.

Interesting views Stephanie, probably true to an extent but with mass exposure comes mass learning, a little education and Geocaching should become better not worse and it's always down to the Geocacher to pick and choose the good series. Interestingly we've sold a lot less nano' containers on our shop http://www.thegeocachingshop.com than larger containers!

5 years ago, this used to be a hobby that took you to remote and interesting places. As it became more widely known, the game has gone downhill. Cache placements saturate every area, and rarely involve a proper walk. Plastic containers as small as 35mm film containers are placed at the base of lay-by bins, at the foot of signposts on short dog-toilet tracks, supermarket car-parks. The number of them now amounts to wholesale littering of the countryside, which is completely at odds with the conservation agenda of the Ramblers.

To misquote Mark Twain - "Geocaching - a good walk ruined"

Lovely to see people picking up on this - I have recently written a thriller (http://www.lulu.com/content/3224830) based round geocaching, where you can even follow the clues and find the caches.

This is the most comprehensive Geocaching article I have seen published for some time and I hope it attracts many new cachers to a most enjoyable and educational passtime.
