Walking in Britain & Walking in Scotland

Walking in Britain & Walking in ScotlandDavid Else / Sandra Bardwell £14.99

Lonely Planet's walking guides return for second (Walking in Scotland) and third (Walking in Britain) editions, extensively revised, reorganised and with a facelift. Layout and maps feature greater clarity than before, and the colour photography has been brought together in glossy 'mini-magazines' detailing the best walking spots and highlights. While offering a great overview, the Britain guide still suffers from scant coverage of many areas (the North York Moors has been dropped). But it does in fairness make mention of most of the country's major walking routes in addition to its 52 varied route descriptions.

The Scottish guide is naturally more comprehensive, and its 66 route descriptions cover summit, coastal, city and shorter walks. The editorial talent remains strong with witty, down-to-earth background written by veteran walkers. Wisely, the emphasis has shifted towards the walking enthusiast, giving more planning and technical advice and relegating the tourist copy to the appendices.
