'999 Mountain Rescue please'

'999 Mountain Rescue please'Paul Mitchen with contributors £7.99

Celebrating its Golden jubilee this year, the Glossop Mountain Rescue Team of the Peak District has marked its milestone with the launch of this new book, which doubles as a worthy fundraiser.

GMRT has been rescuing in the Peak National park for 50 years and is one of the oldest teams in the country. After having its old HQ condemned the team of volunteers have raised funds for a new HQ in Glossop Derbyshire.

'999 Mountain Rescue please' is a light-hearted read covering the team's exploits over the years. More seriously, it gives an excellent insight - from an insider's perspective - into what actually happens if you ever need mountain rescue in the UK.

Mitchen and co. log all the rescue call-outs the team has been on and shares some of the tall stories that grow taller with each telling.

Says author Paul Hitchen: "50 years means a lot of lives saved, a lot of downed pints, a lot of lifelong friends made and a few tragically lost. Mind you, it also means a lot of trudging through mud and snow, a lot of spare time spent training and lots of time spent rattling tins on the street for funds. Oh, and a whole load of time spent faffing. But we wouldn't miss it for the world..."

So too, any walker with a conscience - or a belief in karma - shouldn't miss this grassroots offering.

You can buy the book for £7.99 (plus P&P) online at www.gmrt.org.uk.

All proceeds go to Glossop MR Team funds.
