Tom Franklin - Get Walking Day

blog-tom-cut-out

I’ve just heard that we’ve now got more than 60 walks lined up for this year’s Get Walking Day.  This is the second time we’ve run the event – the idea is to always hold it on 30th May (which is 30/5, and so fits in with the minimum amount of exercise that experts recommend – 30 minutes, 5 times a week).

All the walks are relatively short (between 2 and 5 miles), free, and run by experienced leaders.  The aim is to encourage people who don’t normally walk to give it a go.

60 walks is a good start. But there are over 500 Ramblers groups across Britain, and we’ve got almost three months to go – so I hope lots more groups put on ‘taster’ walks for the day.  Also, it would be great if groups could invite their local MPs or local councillors to join in – they can then see what local groups do first hand.

Get Walking Day is good for getting new people out walking.  But it’s also a great way to recruit new members!  To find out more, visit www.ramblers.org.uk/campaigns/gwd

We now have over 80 walks planned for Get Walking Day!

In addition, Ramblers Cymru are working with the Hay Festival to develop 30-minute walking maps.

Ramblers Scotland will be launching a local community walking hub as part of the Walk Homecoming 2009 initiative. Dalgety Bay Ramblers will be leading a walk from Dalgety Bay Library on Get Walking Day and also promoting the library as their walking hub – a place in the community where three short walks have been identified, graded on bronze, silver and gold levels.
